Chinese culture, explained from Chinese sourcesHow we verify
Symbols of China读懂中国

About the project

Chinese culture, with the context left in.

Symbols of China is an independent English-language reference site for readers who encounter a Chinese motif, name, building or object and want a clear answer grounded in Chinese sources.

What the site covers

The collection is organised around four subjects: auspicious patterns, Chinese naming culture, traditional architecture and cultural symbols. Articles begin with a practical question, then explain the language, object, historical setting and limits of the usual interpretation.

Who it is for

The site is written for readers outside specialist Chinese studies: museum visitors, students, designers, travellers, collectors and anyone trying to understand what they have seen. Chinese characters and pinyin are included when they help, but the explanation must remain understandable in English.

What the site does not claim

A symbol rarely has one timeless meaning across every dynasty, region and object. We do not treat internet lists as universal rules, and we do not present a modern redrawing as a historical artefact. Where the evidence is limited or interpretations differ, the article should say so.

Independent editorial work

Symbols of China is not an official museum, university or government publication. Museum records, historical texts and academic studies are cited as sources; those institutions do not endorse this site unless explicitly stated.
